Lhasa to Lijiang Overland

Right: Rawok-tso, Eastern Tibet

The scenery we encountered crossing east from Lhasa was simply stunning. Crossing pass after pass we encountered and endless array of snow capped mountains, barren waste and frozen lakes. On three occasions we crossed at altitudes in excess of 5000m, the colour scheme a constant, blue white and brown.

At alitudes around 5000m the air is noticably thinner, you inhale around 1/3 less oxygen than at sea level.

Stopping off to stretch our legs for a bit we spied some ruins in the distance so we wandered over to take a look. The woman below was out collecting dung and was kind enough to let me take her picture.

On arrival in the village we were mobbed by a gang of crazy kids shouting "Tashi Delek" jumping up and down and walking along beside us. They were clearly quite excited to have met these strange new people. They were great fun and rather refreshingly weren't harranguing us for money. Clearly the word hadn't yet gone out that foreigners are loaded. Older folk in the village looked at us as if we had just stepped off a spaceship from Mars.
