The Angkor era ruin of Phanom Rung is located in the crater of an extinct volcano 68km or so from the City of Buriram in North East Thailand. About 8km from the main temple is the sanctuary Prasat Muang Tam.

To get there take a local bus from Buriram which will drop you at the road leading up to the ruins. From here motorcycle taxis can take you up to the ruins. Otherwise tourist agencies in Buriram can get you there in more comfort.

Prasat Meung Tam is constructed of laterite, sandstone and brick and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The central part consists of 5 towers representing Mount Meru, the centre of the universe. This is surrounded by a corridor shaped gallery which is in turn surrounded by the courtyard with four ponds and an outer wall.
