Tainan City - Temples at Luermen

Right: Lantern Festival at Holy Mother Temple, Luermen

Luermen (literally "Deer's Ear Gate") is a site of historical importance as this is the staging post for Koxingha's reclaimation of Taiwan from the Dutch occupation. A number of temples were built there during the Ming occupation in Taiwan. The Orthodox Luermen Holy Mother Temple (Sheng Mu Miao) is the biggest and seems to be at the forefront of local rivalry to build the biggest and best.

Taoist ritual

This is a large taoist temple (Tien Hou Gong)near the site where Koxinga landed with his troops. The chief deity as in many temples in the area is Matsu, a goddess of the sea. The temples are pretty busy around Chinese new year and in particular on the fifteenth day of the new moon which is Lantern Festival. During Lantern festival, large lanterns (see below) with prayers nscribed, are sent into the heavens. Where they all land is anyone's guess!
