Ruins of Angkor - Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei

Intricate ornamentation at Banteay Srei

In his 1944 Angkor Guide, Maurice Glaize informs us that Banteay Srei is by popular consensus "a precious gem" and the "Jewel of Khmer Art". Constructed of a hard red sandstone Banteay Samre is almost miniature in design and characterised by intricate and ornate relief carvings. The name translates as "Temple of Women". Banteay Srei was founded by Yajnavaraha during the reign of Jayavarman V in the year 967. The temple is dedicated mainly to Shiva and Vishnu.

Banteay Srei can be combined with visits to Banteay Samre and Kbal Spean which are outside of the 25km loop. It's probably a bit far for most people by bicycle, expect to pay your driver a few extra dollars for the distance. The road out to Kbal Spean is pretty rough. Eat a light lunch.
