Ruins of Angkor - Angkor Thom

My name is Ozymandias,
king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty,
and despair!"

Ozymandis (Percy Bysshe Shelley)

The walled city Angkor Thom was built by Jayavarman VII (1181-1219) and has as it's centre peice The Bayon. The Bayon with it's multiple representations of Avolokiteshevara smiling enigmatically back at the observer, is easily a second favourite to Angkor Wat itself.

The Bayon

In 1181 Jayavarman VII converts to Buddhism to appease increasing numbers of Buddhists in his kingdom. His reign is characterised by extensive building and expansion of the empire. It is followed by a period of decline during whch the city continues to be occupied but no new temples are built.

Angkor Thom is about 10km sq. with five entrances. It includes along with The Bayon several other monuments, notably the Terrace of the Leper King, the Royal Enclosure and the Terrace of Elephants. The Bayon is adorned with numerous bas-reliefs depicting famous battles as well as scenes of every day Khmer life. Dedicated day-dreamers can easily get transported to a time when Kings rode elephants and commissioned audacious monuments in their own honor or that of the Gods.
